Burger King has begun construction on its new site in Carlsbad, NM. The burger leader chose Carlsbad following a steady recruitment process by the Carlsbad Department of Development (CDOD). They plan to open later this spring, joining Starbucks and Carl’s Jr. as the newest entrants to the fast growing market.

Carlsbad continues its quick and steady growth, leading the way for the state of New Mexico. According to recent studies by the Policom Corporation and SmartAsset, Carlsbad and Eddy County sit high in rankings for growth in business investment and new businesses in general. Carlsbad has either been leading in these areas or has been near the top for multiple years.

“We are excited to be coming back to Carlsbad,” said Anthony Josephson, one of the owners of the Burger King franchise. “We have been working on this project for 18 months, and hope to open by the beginning of May.”

The CDOD has worked long in recruiting Burger King back into Carlsbad. The franchise has been through more than one owner over the years, and the project stalled at times. With several other quick-serve restaurants already operating in Carlsbad, adding another option for residents helps to round out the picture. Burger King will bolster the burger offerings for local appetites, and offer another choice for visitors to the community as well.

“We’re very proud to welcome Burger King back to Carlsbad and we know our citizens are excited about having another option,” said Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway. “It’s a great location for a business, and we will help however we can. Carlsbad is showing no signs of slowing down.”

Burger King was founded in 1954 and serves over 11 million customers per day. With nearly 15,000 locations internationally, Burger King is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. There are currently 48 locations across New Mexico. The Carlsbad location will round out the southeastern part of New Mexico, with existing sites in Roswell, Hobbs, and Artesia.

“The Carlsbad location will be one of our larger format stores with a double drive through for faster service,” said Josephson. “It will also include a state of the art playground for family and kids.”

Carlsbad has seen a boom in several areas of growth over the past five years. Industries like oil and gas, manufacturing, and aviation have seen many new businesses enter the market. Commercially, the retail and restaurant side of the coin have also been growing quickly, with new construction taking place across the city.

“As we welcome a new surge of economic development in our community, we are pleased to welcome Burger King back to Carlsbad,” said Eddy County Commissioner and CDOD President Susan Crockett. “Great Communities are developed with patience and perseverance and it is never easy to put all the ingredients together to make a project happen. We want to thank all involved in this endeavor.”

Carlsbad’s commercial front has seen tremendous growth over the past five years. Large chain restaurants such as McAlister’s Deli and Buffalo Wild Wings recently opened to great success. The Carlsbad Pavilion, a shopping center with Ross, Maurice’s, Famous Footwear, and Melrose Fashions as tenants, gives local residents and visitors alike more shopping opportunities as well.

“We are pleased to see Burger King coming back to Carlsbad,” said CDOD Director of Marketing, Jeff Campbell. “This and other franchises will thrive in the growing market.”
