CARLSBAD, NM, June 2026  -- Carlsbad, New Mexico's business community recently celebrated local economic success stories and honored longstanding industry contributions at the Carlsbad Department of Development's (CDOD) 2026 Annual Dinner. This year's theme, "Growth and Momentum", celebrated the region's resilience and legacy of innovation.

Among the evening's highlights were a milestone recognition for Pioneer Bank in the financial industry, the President’s award presented to local business owner Damian Capello; and a special award recognizing the ongoing legacy of Valerie Murrill, a revolutionary leader in the community.

Several area organizations and individuals were honored for their leadership and contributions:

Community Prospector Award: Jordan Bowen
Community Expansion Award: Southeast New Mexico College / Dr. Kevin Beardmore
Quality of Life Award: Dina Navarrette, City of Carlsbad
Community Impact Award: United Way / Kyle Marksteiner
Entrepreneurs of the Year Award: Riley and Kelan Neatherlin
Community Investment Award: Gary and Alex Millican

Pioneer Bank was recognized for its 125-year history in Eddy County. Pioneer Bank has long celebrated the notions of innovation, pride, trust, and history that grows in their way of doing business. Ericka Laney, a former CDOD Board President, accepted the award from CDOD Past President Beverly Allen.

CDOD Board member Damian Capello, selected for this year’s President’s Award, rose to the challenge of taking on a project that had been brought before the full board for several years, but one that no one was eager to take on—the restructuring of CDOD membership levels and board seats.

“This was not an easy task,” said CDOD Board President Susan Crockett. “It required thoughtful analysis, collaboration, and a willingness to navigate difficult conversations. Damian stepped up to the challenge, put in the work, listened to feedback, and helped guide the process to a successful outcome.”

Capello is also developing a building at the Cascades to consolidate his business headquarters.

“His leadership, dedication, and commitment to strengthening the organization have positioned CDOD for continued growth and success,” added Crockett.

Long time CDOD Board Member and former President Valerie Murrill was honored with a special ‘Legacy in Action’ award. Murrill continues to be at the forefront of economic development efforts as a business owner and leader in the Carlsbad community.

“Valerie possesses a remarkable understanding of projects and initiatives across nearly every facet of Carlsbad and Eddy County,” said Crockett. “Whether it's economic development, community partnerships, or quality-of-life initiatives, she brings invaluable insight and perspective to every discussion.  More importantly, her willingness to invest in others and help develop future leaders is part of the legacy she continues to build every day.”
