CARC, Inc. Creates Opportunities for Developmentally Disabled Residents to Live Fulfilling Lives

If you visit the Carlsbad Farmers Market, you can pick up some locally grown pecans and various garden plants grown by the individuals at CARC, Inc. For more than 50 years, CARC, Inc. has provided housing, work opportunities, and recreational options for people with developmental disabilities.
“We’re very big in the programs we provide for the community,” says KK Gonsalez, Work Services Director at CARC, Inc. “We provide several opportunities for individuals to work and make Carlsbad a better place to live through their contributions.”

Residents Choose Paths Based on Their Abilities and Interests
CARC, Inc. provides services to 68 individuals who have all been diagnosed with a developmental disability. There is a wide range of diagnoses for the residents including Down syndrome, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and Paraplegia. However, disabilities vary from one person to the next, which is why CARC, Inc. has processes for residents to get the care they need while also embracing their independence.
More than 50 individuals work while living at CARC, Inc. Others have reached an age where they can retire and spend their time exploring hobbies and learning new things. Some residents are unable to work and use their time to grow their skills, like improving their reading and writing or building their dexterity.
“When visitors stop by CARC, Inc., they sometimes have predetermined opinions or even fears about people with developmental disabilities,” says Gonsalez. “But then they can see that our residents are people too. They like to work, follow their passions, and perform services. This allows the community to see that individuals with disabilities are just like them.”
CARC, Inc. is notable for its Special Olympics training. Many residents work out in their free time and attend practice to prepare for local and regional competitions.
You Can Find CARC, Inc. Residents Working Across Carlsbad
CARC, Inc. has several programs across its campus for individuals to work. Here are just a few ways that residents of CARC, Inc. can spend their days,
- Residents can participate in processing pecans for sale. The Pecos Valley Pecans are then sold on-site and at the local farmers market.
- They can assist with document shredding, helping Carlsbad residents and companies destroy sensitive documents to protect their personal information.
- They can work in the horticulture program at the country store and greenhouse, potting barn, or plant rental program, growing plants to beautify Carlsbad's gardens.
- Individuals can support the operations at CARC, Inc., assisting in the dining hall, on the grounds team, or on the janitorial team.
CARC, Inc. also brings individuals with developmental disabilities into the community. It has about 90 contracts with local businesses to support their landscaping efforts. Individuals plant shrubs and flowers in the spring and fall to improve the aesthetics of local companies.
“CARC, Inc., a longtime CDOD member, is a shining example of how economic and workforce development can be inclusive and community-driven,” says Kristen Gamboa, Executive Director of the Carlsbad Department of Development (CDOD). “By creating meaningful work opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, they are not only enriching lives but also strengthening Carlsbad’s workforce and contributing to our regional economy.”
Additional programs include cleaning up the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park before guests arrive and offering overtime lunches to miners who work long hours. CARC, Inc. residents' hard work can even be seen at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, preparing salt bag samples for the tours.

CARC Inc. Supports the Quality of Life in Carlsbad
Community programs through CARC, Inc. allow the greater Carlsbad community to make connections with people who have developmental disabilities. Residents can challenge their preconceived notions of what people with Down syndrome or other diagnoses are capable of. The work programs also make Carlsbad a more beautiful place and improve the lives of residents who are affected by CARC Inc. residents.
However, there are also direct benefits to families in Carlsbad who have loved ones with developmental disabilities. They can see the people they care about find meaning and purpose in life.
“Families, loved ones, and guardians can know that they have a place they can trust,” says Gonsalez. “They know that we’re going to take care of their loved ones.”
On average, residents live at CARC, Inc. for 15 years, and some have been there for more than 30 years. They enjoy a variety of social activities, including karaoke, holiday parties and dances, and recreational sports. It’s not just a place to live and work, CARC Inc. has created a community where individuals can have fun, grow, and thrive.
“Organizations like CARC, Inc. are essential to building a vibrant and resilient economy,” says Gamboa. “Their work supports local businesses, enhances quality of life, and proves that everyone has a role to play in Carlsbad’s continued growth and success.”
